Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques from different martial arts styles to be used in competition. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.
The earliest documented minimal-rules fighting event was the ancient Greek pankration, which was introduced into the Olympic Games in 648 BC. MMA events re-emerged in Brazil in the 1920s, where the Gracie family Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners often challenged representatives of other martial arts to “vale-tudo” fights.
Modern Mixed Martial Arts competition started in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). MMA is today the most exciting, fastest growing sport in the world, and it epitomizes the future of combat athletics. Its effectiveness is recognized by the US Army and Marine Corps – both use MMA as a foundation for their close-quarters combatives program.
While competition in the sport is occasionally depicted as brutal by the media, the truth is that MMA has a better safety record than other contact sports such as football. Protective equipment and other safety precautions are always in place to protect the athletes.
Cross training is a pivotal part of our MMA program. Training in different disciplines not only provides the students with a complete set of self-defense skills, but also helps them get fit faster, without ever getting bored!
